When most people think of bees, they think of the honeybee. But there are around 3,600 species of native bees in the US–over 400 in Virginia–and they are excellent pollinators! These bees were living here thousands of years before the honeybee was imported by European colonists, and they are perfectly matched to native flowering plants and trees. Sadly, they are facing many threats. Join Xerces Ambassador and Master Naturalist Rosalind Reilly to learn about these forgotten pollinators and why the best way to “save the bees” is not to get a hive, but to make simple changes in our lawn and garden routines that will help native bees survive and thrive.
